CIVE3220|2019S2 Geotechnical Engineering

This course develops fundamental soil mechanics theory and its application to geotechnical analysis and design. Topics covered include stress distribution in soils, compressibility, and consolidation of soils, 1D-consolidation theory and characteristics, slope stability, modes of slope failure, analysis of infinite slope. Students are also introduced to site investigations, bearing capacity and geotechnical design of shallow and deep foundation, a brief introduction about the lateral earth pressure and the calculation of safety factor for retaining walls. This course also includes laboratory work.
