TRAN4214-2023S2 Project/Practicum

The project represents the culmination of the students’ training. It is a large-scale assignment that is meant to show the students’ abilities in handling translation projects at the different linguistic and professional levels required. Each student is to be assigned to a project supervisor who will produce a report on the progress stages and achievements. The project is to be discussed and evaluated in a mini viva. In the practicum variant, the student is placed in a professional environment for the total duration of the term under local supervision. The local supervisor is to submit a report on the performance of the student. The student has to submit an extended report at the end of the training period detailing the tasks performed with an analytical evaluation of the work. TRAN4224-2023S2 Translation Revision and Post-Editing
Welcome to the course TRAN4224 on revision and post-editing in the context of translation. In the classroom, you will be introduced to an area that you will certainly need to know more about, as it is needed as a skill and practice. This training will not only improve your translation skills but also cultivate a discerning ability to identify and correct errors and inconsistencies through the practice of editing and revising. The difference is that you will enrich your know-how (competencies) and know-what (knowledge) by knowing about the field as an area of practice and inquiry (research and scholarship). Much of the focus will be on practicing revising, editing, and post-editing skills using software and computers. We will spend the majority, if not all, of the time in the assigned lab.

TRAN4223-2023S2 Simultaneous Interpreting
Building on the skills that students should have acquired in Consecutive Interpreting, Simultaneous Interpreting is another practical interpreting course that aims at enhancing students’ interpreting skills further, this time in the simultaneous mode. Initiation of students into simultaneous interpreting is only carried out after students are trained on a set of such preparatory exercises as listening and memory exercises, dual-/multi-task training/counting down, shadowing, summarizing and abstracting in the simultaneous mode, running commentary, smart shadowing and simultaneous paraphrase, cloze and anticipation exercises, lag exercises, sight interpreting, etc. In addition to further improving students’ oral-aural communicative competence in both working languages, the preparatory exercises are designed to consolidate students’ active listening and analysis skills; ability to comprehend, retain and repeat oral-aural and written messages monolingually and bilingually in various communicative situations in part and/or in full; and the skills and strategies necessary to cope with time constraints, split attention, heavy cognitive load and limited resources characteristic of the cognitively complex simultaneous interpreting activity. At a later stage, students are then trained on simultaneous interpreting proper transitioning from easy and controlled to real simultaneous interpreting and progressing from simple and easy-to-handle texts and text types to the processing of more challenging speeches, text types and topics.
