Audiovisual Translation (AVT) is an exciting new field in Translation Studies for which there is a growing professional demand, and the need for professionals in this field has grown exponentially at local, regional, and international levels. Though it is an elective, it has very important weight and importance in the real world, society, and economy. AVT graduates will work in various media, multimedia, and creative industries. At SU, we prepare you for the professional world by performing different roles within the translation workflow, by translating a wide variety of audiovisual programmes, and by specializing in areas such as subtitling, audio description, and voiceover.
Should you wish to proceed with further training and education, we will train you on how to engage in research inquiries within AVT through our seminars on special topics and customized research methodologies applied to applied translation studies in general, particularly in the area of AVT.

TRAN5212-2023S2 Interpreting Skills
Interpreting Skills provides students with a grounding in interpreting studies and practice, with a focus on the processes, techniques and skills of the three major interpreting modes: consecutive, sight and simultaneous interpreting. The topics studied highlight such important aspects of the complex interpreting process as note-taking for consecutive interpreting, simultaneity and split-attention, comprehension, memory and information retention, strategies, input variables and production. Students practice in the Lab to master the skills of active listening and analysis, ability to retain and restate oral-aural and written messages in various communicative situations, as well as skills to cope with time constraints, split attention, heavy cognitive load and limited resources in all three modes.

TRAN5211-2023S2 Intercultural Mediation in Translation and Interpreting
The course provides students with a solid grounding in cultural approaches to translation and interpreting and intercultural mediation in practice. It primarily focuses on the way culture manifests itself in various genres and impacts the textual construction of meaning through culturemes or culturally embedded extratextual values and references as well as textual conventions. Students study the various techniques involved in handling the cultural elements and conventions of texts in translation and the impact of these techniques on the recipients of translation. They learn to go beyond the text as a unit of translation and also investigation, taking into careful consideration the cultural environment in which the text exists and evolves as well as the web of cultural signs and symbols of both source and target cultures. Students go on to complement this theoretical grounding with practical exercises focusing on problems of a cultural nature through translation and comparison of original texts and their translations.
