ENGL1213-2019S2 Introduction to Translation - B

This course constitutes an introduction to Contrastive Grammar through the analysis and production of translated texts. Through a focus on translation, the course will also develop the participants’ understanding of a variety of structural and cultural issues in both languages and their impact on meaning. This will be implemented on a carefully selected set of texts. Material for translation will be divided equally between English and Arabic texts and will be graded according to structural complexity.

This course introduces students to a number of key international institutions from the perspective of their emergence, objectives, tasks, membership and power structure, and internal structure, which aims to enrich students’ general knowledge and trigger their curiosity about international issues. Relying on analysis of input from a variety of texts, the course is equally intended to develop language.

This course is intended to expose students to English used in a wide variety of medical fields and situations, develop their communication skills, and provide them with a background in major medical and care concepts. It aims at developing students’ lexical repertoire in relation to the field of health sciences and medicine and their competence in dealing with medical texts. It equips students with a solid knowledge of the linguistic, grammatical, semantic and conceptual features of medical and health-related texts.
