The course aims to develop students’ ability to analyse and respond to media from local to international through news, entertainment, film, sports and tourism. The course will also expose students to different media genres through educational investigation of style, themes, and consequences from media language. Comprehensive media genre analysis in this course is central to the achievement of knowledge development and skill enhancement with the use of a variety of real and authentic media texts such as newspapers, blogs, advertisements and interview transcripts. The focus of teaching and learning activities is on context production to help students understand the different professional institutions of communication.

This course addresses English-Arabic translation of legal documents, covering a range of legal subtypes, including informational documents (e.g. academic legal books and articles), common legal documents (e.g. court cases, certificates), and legislative documents (e.g. contracts, decrees, treaties, conventions, agreements, constitutions). Full consideration will be given to lexical, syntactic, and textual features of English and Arabic Legal discourse and to problems of legal equivalence.

This course is a continuation of WRIT4111 and combines theoretical understanding with practical application through reading, discussion and extensive writing exercises. It covers conventions and formats of professional writing and involves organizing and presenting written texts with an emphasis on clear, precise, objective thinking as well writing as demonstrated through a series of written documents—minute of meeting, reports (presenting opinions & arguments, comparing and contrasting ideas, describing facts and figures, trends, organizations and products plus summarizing data), marketing and advertising documents.

This course is designed to introduce the field of interpreting and serves as an initiation to this profession. Students will be exposed to the techniques related to consecutive and simultaneous interpreting applied to a variety of language chunks. Throughout the course, students will be trained to deal with the basic problems and psychological constraints associated with interpreting.
